August 1st Book Haul

Hello bookworms! I am back today with a very small book haul- good books nonetheless. So, before yesterday I hadn’t been to a bookstore in a month. One month! Insane! To break my unintentional streak I paid a visit to BookXcess yesterday and walked out with only one book in hand. Unfreakingbelieveable.

I was quite disappointed with my lack of books, so I did what any rational book-crazy person would do– I went in search of more books. My search led me to a secondhand bookstore (not exactly a bookstore more like a booth with a table of books). There I found two books. Which makes three books in total.

No, but seriously, I’m happy with what I got and three is better than none, right?

Here are the books I got:

Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

I’ve had my eye on this book ever since its release last year but didn’t get it because of it’s ridiculous pricing. And guess what? I got the hardback for only RM 17.90 yesterday at BookXcess.

Darcy Patel has put college and everything else on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. Arriving in New York with no apartment or friends she wonders whether she’s made the right decision until she falls in with a crowd of other seasoned and fledgling writers who take her under their wings…

Told in alternating chapters is Darcy’s novel, a suspenseful thriller about Lizzie, a teen who slips into the ‘Afterworld’ to survive a terrorist attack. But the Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead and as Lizzie drifts between our world and that of the Afterworld, she discovers that many unsolved – and terrifying – stories need to be reconciled. And when a new threat resurfaces, Lizzie learns her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she loves and cares about most.

Runemarks by Joanne Harris

This one’s from the secondhand bookstore, so it’s not in the best of conditions but it was only 5 bucks and the money collected goes to a society helping poor kids. So, why not? It’s about Norse mythology with goblins and stuff. The thing is I didn’t really check exactly how many pages this book had until I came home and now I know it’s 504 pages long with really really small fonts.

The major fantasy debut from bestselling author Joanne Harris, now in paperback.

Seven o’clock on a Monday morning, five hundred years after the end of the world, and goblins have been at the cellar again. Not that anyone would admit it was goblins. In Maddy Smith’s world, order rules. Chaos, old gods, faeries, magic—all of these were supposedly vanquished centuries ago. But Maddy knows that a small bit of magic has survived. The “ruinmark” she was born with on her palm proves it—and makes the other villagers fearful and suspicious that she is a witch.

But the mysterious traveler One-Eye sees Maddy’s mark not as a defect, but a destiny. And Maddy will need every scrap that One-Eye can teach her about runes, cantrips, and glamours—every ounce of magic she can command—if she is to survive that destiny.

So Much Closer by Susane Colasanti

The second book from the secondhand bookstore. At only RM 5 with some yellowed pages and New York in the story, I’m excited to read this YA contemporary romance.

When Brooke discovers that the love of her life, Scott Abrams, is moving from their New Jersey suburb to New York City for senior year, she decides to follow hime there. Living with her estranged father and adjusting to a whole new school are challenging–and things get even worse when she finds out that Scott already has a girlfriend. But as she learns to navigate the big city, she starts to discover a whole new side of herself, and realizes that sometimes love can find you even when you’re not looking for it.

So, that’s it for this mini book haul. Have you read any of the books listed? I am particularly interested in your thoughts on Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld, seeing as it’s a huge book with equal commitment needed if I were to start it. Let me know in the comments. Have a great August ahead of you and stay bookish. Hugs! ❤

Thank you! The thing is I never meant to impose a book buying ban, it pretty much imposed itself this past month due to studies. I’ve never tried a self-imposed one before but I am positive I don’t have the self-control to see it through.
That’s good to hear! It is a big book, how long did it take you to finish it?

Loved So Much Closer, I’ve read every single one of her books (except for the second to last one, which im gonna get to soon) but they’re all amazing. My favorite is Keep Holding On and Something Like Fate because it was the first I read from her, and I recently read her newest book City Love which is the first in a trilogy and I loved it as well. She’s one of the queens of contemporary in my opinion (:

I haven’t read any of Westerfeld’s books but I hear the Uglies trilogy is outstanding, I really should get to that too. I have read mixed reviews of Afterworlds and I’m curious as to why. Hope I’ll get to it soon!
      Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
